What are the benefits of being a member of Sigma Alpha Delta? What will Sigma Alpha Delta do for me?
We are the oldest Honor Society at Baruch. Having started out as an honor society serving day students, over time we have evolved to serve both evening and day students. Our society provides continuous support for its members in their pursuit of academic excellence, valuable communitarian contributions and sustainable networking opportunities, all with a focus on diversity and for the betterment of present and future generations. Throughout history we have been instrumental in implementing various events and programs that serve to enrich the Baruch experience and to develop our members.

How long has Sigma Alpha Delta been around?
Longer than Pepsi, longer than Home Depot, before Baruch’s current Dean was even born, and before Elvis or the Beatles were even thought of. Sigma Alpha Delta’s history began originally as Sigma Alpha in 1932, when it was the first junior honorary society of the School of Business of Civic Administration of City College. (Later the School was renamed in honor of the financier Bernard Baruch and became Baruch College of the City University of New York.) Around 1959, Mr. Irving Liss decided to start an evening chapter to serve the school’s growing evening student population which came to be called Sigma Alpha, Delta Chapter and was led Mr. Liss as its first Chancellor. Today the Society no longer has a chapter, but it is a society in its own, called Sigma Alpha Delta Honor Society.

Is this a national honor society?
Sigma Alpha Delta is not a national honor society. Throughout our history, we have preferred to remain independent and represent only the students at Baruch. Sigma Alpha Delta is Baruch’s oldest and very own honor society, started by students who wanted to make a difference in the quality of life at our college

How can I become an officer of Sigma Alpha Delta? Do I need to be a part of a certain committee?
One major distinction between Sigma Alpha Delta and other Honor Societies in the nation besides being student ran is that in order to be inducted into the society as an officer you must have effectively proven your dedication to our mission and goals throughout a semester. Beyond the academic requirements students must actively participate in at least two of committee’s activities, as well as volunteer at least twice throughout the semester. Inductions to Sigma Alpha Delta take place every Fall and Spring.

The Membership Contribution and Other Ways to Contribute
How can I help out Sigma Alpha Delta with their activities?
To remain an Active member we expect that you support the organization in any way you can. The best way to do so is to become an officer of the organization as we have many openings with various responsibilities every year. Please see the committee position descriptions on the website or on our blackboard site.
I can’t come to the events! In what other ways can I contribute?
Many people can contribute many things without even coming to our events. You can post flyers, you can write essays, you can mentor or tutor someone else, you can help with fundraising, you can bring a speaker, and you can update the website and so much more. Think of something that might be easier for you to do and significantly harder for the average student and let that be your contribution. It is also considered contributing just by sharing your ideas, thoughts and plans during general and committee meetings. You may also assist in the structure and planning of committee goals, etc via email and phone conversations with a committee chair or vice chair.
I cannot do any of the things mentioned. Can I still be a member?
You must participate actively to get the full benefits and positive affects of the society. To become a member one must either satisfy the academic requirement or begin to participate in the society with plans on raising their overall GPA. Please note induction into the society does not occur unless you are active in some way or another within a committee throughout a semester.
